Appreciating Home

When you have been away from home and then return, you find yourself appreciating that which you thought dull and boring beforehand.

This photo is not my house. I have misplaced mine. When I say misplaced, I don't mean the actual house but the photos I have of the outside of it. That may be good luck on your part as they were pictures I took while it was being built from foundations upwards over several weeks. This is a house that looks a lot like mine except it is situated opposite a house that contains a family from hell, and I am thankful for that.

We have been home a week now and every day I have had a warm and fuzzy moment where I embraced the comfort of 'home'. These moments consisted of;

  • The smell and feel of my own bed (clean and fresh linens)
  • Being able to wander around in scruffy clothes and slippers
  • Having a shower using my favourite toiletries - and knowing where they are.
  • The smell of my dogs feet (digestive biscuits) as they lie on the sofa next to me.
  • The sense of peace knowing where the boys are and that they can't break anything belonging to someone else or get lost.
  • Looking out at my garden, weeds, puddles and all and seeing my birds on the bird table.
  • Sitting on the sofa at night, everyone in their place - and relaxing.

Also now that the weather seems to have turned and I suspect winter is on it's way - autumn may have already been and gone while we were in Florida! I am sensing the comfort of dark nights, closing the curtains and putting on the fire.

As much as I love summer, sitting out in the sun and longer days, I also love the cosiness of being snug in the house while it rains and blows and snows outside. Of course come January I will be moaning again and wishing for summer, but I guess I am just a fickle girl.

Last night FIL/MIL asked us to go out for dinner with them to a lovely restaurant a few miles away called The Snowy Owl. It was pouring down, gloomy and had a very wintery feel. Inside the restaurant they had lit candles and put heating on. A final touch would have been lighting the log fire but that would have made it too warm. It was really pretty and made me think of Christmas. (Only 14 weeks away!)

However, in this family a lot is going to happen before Christmas. Autumn is a busy time of year. Apart from my birthday, there are also another four in October as well as Halloween. November sees Alexander's Birthday on the 3rd, then bonfire night. We then have seven weeks to prepare for Christmas.

Oh Im glad to be home. Everything is easier at home. I feel less stressed and organised.

It's only 220 days until our next holiday in Florida though!

Talking of being organised, I forgot to tell you while away - I was browsing the stationery aisle in Target (I love stationery) when I saw these 'organising' packs and a whole magazine about organising your life. I wish I could remember what it was called. There were little files and magnetic envelopes and binders etc all colour co-ordinated as I like them to be. What caught my eye most though was a Moms calender. It ws great, had little stickers and things to add and a pouch at the bottom. Anyone know the range of products I'm rambling about??

I was just about to put it in my basket when I noticed that all the dates were different to ours. It had al the US holidays on it, which I could live with I suppose, but also other dates relating to school etc. I almost had a nervous breakdown trying to decide wether I could cope with all this extra useless information on what would be a 'busy' calendar anyway.

I did my little dither dance thatI do when I can't decide (Librans don't do decisions very well). You know that 'pick it up, put it back, walk away, come back, pick it up, put it back thing?'

Mick made the decision for me. "What do you need that crap for?" he said. "I don't" I said and flung it back on the shelf. Now I'm wondering if there is anywhere here in the UK or online where I can get something similar.

Oh dear I've gone on a bit - off to do the chores (Snow White style - whistling while I work, )

OOh home is comfy isnt it? That's another purpose of trips too, to make you appreciate home even more.

We have one more thing in common, we are both Librans.

Raxx - do you have the same foibles that I have and do the dither dance when you have a decision to make?

Lisa - Yes the bed has to be the best thing. My dogs feet smell like biscuits. I think it's a lovely smell. OK so I'm strange.

I love it. M/M/J just has to say, "You don't need that crap." and your decision is made! LOL!

Okay wait. Why do you like the smell of your dog's feet? Dog feet smell horrible! I'm dog-sitting Angelina Jolie again this weekend, and she was laying on the bed with me yesterday and gosh does she STINK! Her owner did not give her a bath before bringing her over. her feet smell disgusting, as does her belly! Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Justine - For some reason Elkhounds don't have that doggy smell. I keep meaning to find out why, but only when they have been rolling in something do they smell. maybe their feet smell nicer than other dogs because of this. Perhaps I need to smell other dogs' feet to find out? Doesn't Angelina's smell of biscuits/cookies too? I never bath my two either. Those that show them do but I have never found I needed to.

Putz - No my house is neat and tidy with very few ornaments. Partly because it's a new house and there isn't anywhere to put them and partly because having a young child and two dogs, things get broken easily.
My MIL has stuff EVERYWHERE. It's all I can do to stop myself putting it all in a box and sending it to Oxfam when I'm round there.

Oh I am so pleased that you like the smell of your dogs feet.

My dogs feet smell like Basmati Rice, I can't get enough of them.

Basmati Rice? Now that's another smell I could sit next to. What breed of dogs do you have? I wonder if there are lots more doggy feet smells out there?

we had the boy from hell, that used to walk in from across the street and come in uninvited to our house, pee in our toliets, eat our donuts, and then leave...we don't lock doors in ephraim and when we did talk to his parents, they said we were like grandparents to him and would we really mind, of course we really didn't mind

Hi,

Thank you for visiting my blog.

Yes, I found you through the award, it is so nice to know where it originated from and so lovely to know that your youngest drew it.

putz - That's lovely. My nana used to have kids in and out of her house and loved it although she complained every time someone came in. Did he lift the lid though?
